Noumenon was founded in 2003 by Carl De Smet (1970, Dendermonde) as a medium to advance collaborative experiments in art, science, design and architecture. De Smet studied experimental art at the St. Lucas Institute in Brussels and philosophy at the University of Brussels (VUB). Pierre de Gelder (1973, Terneuzen, NL), who majored in Political Science at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, is a regular contributor to noumenon's projects.
Noumemon aims at altering DIY furniture by using shape memory polyurethane. In this idea the packaging and the end product are one and the same. The prime example is a small cube that changes into a seat when plugged into the electricity grid. The cube will then metamorphose into a seat.
