Gabriel Shalom Wash Choose Peel Chop Rinse Artist, director, composer
Gabriel Shalom (US/UK) is an artist living and working in Berlin, Germany. His practice combines elements of experimental cinema, video art and musique concrète. He explores the hidden musicality in everyday objects, instruments and situations, using music as a vehicle for the transformation of the mundane into transcendent compositions and patterns. In addition to his work as an artist, he has written and spoken extensively on Hypercubism, his theory of object-oriented aesthetics.

Wash Choose Peel Chop Rinse
In the five movements which make up "wash choose peel chop rinse", different stages of the process of making vegetable soup stock are examined in microcinematic detail. Rhythmic audiovisual compositions are revealed in the most mundane and subtle aspects of the preparation of various different vegetables.
This series of prints were created by capturing the editing timelines of the five movements of wash choose peel chop rinse. These images allow us to experience time as a static artifact of the musical composition process. Each slice of the simulated video frames correspond on a one-to-one basis with audible changes in the rhythmically edited video art work. In the process of making these images, the artist acts as a human agent of the video rendering codec. Each slice is hand selected to become part of the final image composite.
